Call Me MiSTER

The Purpose of Call Me MiSTER (Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) at WCU is to increase the pool of available male teachers of color in the Western Carolina region and across the state of North Carolina.

With racially and ethnically diverse students emerging as the majority population in our public schools, it is vital that the educator workforce reflect the students whom they serve. Each Call Me MiSTER cohort is comprised of 3-5 male students from racially or ethnically diverse backgrounds pursuing a degree in Elementary, Inclusive, or Middle Grades Education.

  • A living-learning community cohort model for social and cultural support
  • A mentorship program to support their leadership development and personal growth

  • Community engagement opportunities including summer internships

MiSTER Responsibilities

Call Me MiSTER Scholars Must:

  • Major in Elementary, Inclusive, or Middle Grades Education
  • Not withdraw from any class without advisement
  • Satisfy all requirements for admission to the teacher education program
  • Reside in the living-learning community for the duration of their undergraduate program
  • Teach one year in an elementary or middle school for each year funds were received from Call Me MiSTER
  • Conduct himself in a manner that exemplifies values of a positive role model
  • Attend all scheduled Call Me MiSTER seminars and activities

How to Become A MiSTER

Now:

  1. Complete the Call Me MiSTER Interest Form.  Once we have received your form, program staff will contact you to talk about the following steps.

Then:

  1. Apply to WCU
  2. Submit the Call Me MiSTER application (COMING SOON) and supporting documents including
  • two letters of recommendation
  • statement from applicant certifying the student is from an underserved population or a background of economic hardship
  • Written essay addressing the questions: 1.) Why do you want to teach? 2.) How do you believe the Call Me MiSTER program will benefit you?
  1. Participate in the Call Me MiSTER interview process on WCU's Cullowhee campus
