Secondary Application Processes for Distance Learning

Admission to Distance Learning programs involves two distinct steps:

  1. University Admission – You must first be accepted to the university.
  2. Program Admission – After university acceptance, you must be accepted into your specific program.

Programs may close applications either by published deadlines or once they reach capacity. If a program is not listed on the application, it is no longer available for the semester in which you are applying.

Note: Until you are admitted to both the university, and program, WCU will be contacting your via your application credentials (personal email address).

Catamount Portal

For details about Distance Learning Programs, visit our Distance Learning Programs page. To learn more about the application process and see which programs are offered each semester, visit our Distance Learning Apply page. This page focuses specifically on Step 2 of the application process: program admission. If you have questions about other aspects of the application process, please return to the Future Students page

Important: Program deadlines and closure dates are separate from university deadlines. Some programs may close earlier than the university’s general admission deadline (see each tab below for specifics). If your program closes while you are still completing Step 1 (university admission), you will not be able to enroll for that term. You must be accepted to both the university and your program to be admitted.

Intent to Enroll Forms (ITEs) are sent through the Catamount Portal to students who are admitted to their programs. For programs without their own decision dates (see below for details). ITEs are sent beginning in February for summer/fall terms & September for spring terms

Distance students do not pay enrollment deposits. Instead, submitting the ITE serves as your confirmation of enrollment.

If you are returning to WCU and were previously a different major or you were previously a residential (campus) student, you will complete the process listed below within each section.

For students who are returning from the distance major they were previously, back to the same distance major your process may look slightly different depending on major. Please contact distance@wcu.edu if you have questions about your process, but do review the information below as well. Also, some programs will admit students who are returning back to the same distance major they were previously after indicated deadlines (it highly depends on space).
