The Comscore report of 22.4 billion queries in April of 2008 can be thought of as a foundation level of the world's questioning. But twenty-two billions questions is just the first rung of the questioning ladder. Search engines are most successful with very basic questions. The links in the above table represent the growth of additional systems to go beyond the power of the common search engine. The above services address those questions which cannot be easily answered by search engines and therefore require the direct application of human intelligence. These links lead to online question databases that are capable of going "beyond the basic" question or problem and responses to the higher order questions of others.
Many of the questions found in these Q&A databases are basic and could be answered by a quick search engine query. To often the intelligence of Q&A systems is sought because the asker does not know how to use an online search engine or is not willing to do the search work themselves. As more users discover the effectiveness of search engines for most questions of basic facts, the depth and quality of Q&A questions is likely to grow.
These question-answer based systems have 3 major categories of financial support: free (with and without advertising), pay the question asker and pay the answer finder. A significant subset of such systems has emerged that is being called expert networks. Understanding the role and value of questioning is important for a wide range of personal, social and economic needs.
