Piracy had become big business in the American mainland colonies as early as 1689. This period lasted until 1718, which ironically was the year that Blackbeard was killed off the coast of North Carolina. This time is often referred to as 'The Golden Age of Piracy'. By the 1700's, North Carolina had already achieved a reputation as a place that received pirates. The Governor of North Carolina, Charles Eden, whom lived in Bath, NC, was known to pardon pirates and allow them to roam the coast. Click on Blackbeard above to learn more about him! Blackbeard was not the only pirate that roamed the coast of North Carolina. There were other famous pirates before Blackbeard. To learn more about pirates of North Carolina, click on the pictures below!

THE GREAT DEMISE

Blackbeard was killed by Lt. Robert Maynard on November 21, 1718 off the coast of Okracoke, North Carolina. After Maynard killed Blackbeard, he severed his head and attached it to the bowspirit of his ship, the 'Ranger'. Legend has it that Blackbeard then swam around the ship several times headless, and finally disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean.Click on the picture above to find out more about Blackbeards demise.

PIRATES TODAY AND IN THE FUTURE

Pirates today are your typical common thieves. There is still some pirating on the high seas, but not like in the days of Blackbeard. The waters off the coast of North Carolina are patrolled by local officials, and little other than fishing, boating, and watersports takes place. Unless you would like to end up like Blackbeard, I would throw away any ideas of being a pirate today.

In March of 1997, Blackbeards' ship was found off the coast of North Carolina in Beaufort.
