International Festival April 15, 1997 on the Bell Tower Green
On Tuesday, April 15, Western Carolina University celebrated its 18th International Festival on the Bell Tower Green. This event was filled with a variety of musical entertainment, arts and crafts, delicious food, and storytelling. These artifacts were displayed at a booth representing Japan. They included silks, musical instruments, ceramic figurines, and photographs. This mouth watering BBQ entree is called Burgogi and it's a native dish from Japan.
Lee Knight, a native from Western Carolina, kept the crowd entertained with his talented story telling and singing. Susie Stephen's class, from Speedwell Child Development Center, enjoyed hearing one of Lee Knight's amazing Cherokee stories (With sound: automatic, 214K or control console, 296K). This humorous Scottish man was making fun of a pair of pants...but we won't make fun of his kilt...ha, ha.
An incredible calypso band called Been Caught Steelin' was definitely one of the high points of the festival. The band is from Greensboro, North Carolina. The rhythm from the steel drums got everyone dancing...here's one of the many congo lines that started. (With sound: automatic, 96K or control console, 96K) The Kenyan sculptor Gakunju Billy Kaigwa demonstrated his craftsmanship and his artistic abilities, showing both a finished piece and work in progress.
