Live Interactive Communication- MUDs

There are a variety of formats and purposes for bringing multiple people together online simultaneously. One genre of this concept goes by the names of MUD's, MOO's, MUSH, MUSE, MUCK and more. These started as text only display games of the Dungeons and Dragons variety, but with the advent of Mosaic like tools, images and sounds will become a regular part of these environments. Further, the design concept is now being exploited for a wide variety of purposes beyond gaming. Educators using collaborative learning concepts will find a number of worthwhile parallels. For problem solving, the MUD genre will play an increasingly important role in looking for information and assessing work in progress. As you will see in your browsing, perhaps one of the more fundamental problems will be building a collection of "cleaner MUD" for K-12 use. Send me any such K-12 candidates that you run across that I could list here.
