North Carolina's history provides a rich background for studying natural disasters. Over the years, North Carolinians faced the challenges of thunderstorms, floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes. Some storms come and go without notice while others create tremendous hardships, problems, and challenges for people. As we gain new knowledge and understanding of each storm, we are better prepared. Specific storms including the Flood of 1916, the Earthquake of 1889, and the Hurricane of 1989: Hugo greatly affected North Carolina. These storms caused much damage. People faced great economic turmoil and loss, temporary and permanent environmental damage, and emotional toils and upheaval. In addition many lives were lost.

However, during these hard times North Carolinians collectively organized and worked together helping family, friends, and neighbors survive. During these trying times, many acts of heroism are evident.
