Educational Case Study #1: Correlations with the†
NC Educational Technology Competency Requirements

The NC educational technology competencies apply to teacher education faculty, pre-service educators and in-service educators. Part one of 114 competency sub-topics is a listing or taxonomy of basic computer skills. To some, this might suggest that teachers can learn such skills outside of any educational context and then apply them as needed. In contrast, this case study model is built around the reverse idea.  It presumes that educational relevance and rationale are critical to a teacher's motivation, understanding and application. This case study is built from the idea that the place to begin is with what the state refers to in the second part of its competency listing as the advanced competency topics. The design of the case studies therefore follows from various classroom situations, integrating basic technology skills as needed and appropriate to the educational setting.

†The table below indicates the correlation between elements of the case study story and the competencies as set out by the state task force. The purpose of these teacher competencies is to further enable North Carolina K-12 students to meet the standards of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in terms of both its general computer literacy objectives, and the more specific goals of the computer literacy strand which in turn must support the comprehensive K-12 Curriculum Matrix.

†The teaching of these competencies is supported in part through the technical innovation of Web Video. With Web Video, the web server computer broadcasts or transfers short training videoclips from a web server. They are playable as soon as the data begins to arrive, making them available quickly and efficiently to any educator anywhere that has current computer access to the Internet.
