Unit Plan Updates for Spreadsheets
Linking Spreadsheet Files to Web Pages
Find the appropriate headings in section VII. and IX. of your unit plan
relevant to spreadsheets. Whether on the Mac or Win platform, create the
two spreadsheets below in Excel. Excel can instantly convert your spreadsheets
into web page tables that place the data in table cells. To turn any Excel
spreadsheet into a web page, just use the Excel commands to save the file
as a web page. In newer versions of Excel, this command can be found under
the File menu, "Save as Web Page" while in older versions, Save As must
be selected and then the format pull-down menu must be used to change the
format to HTML or Web page format. One can also link a spreadsheet file
for others to download and use, but they must have Excel on their computer
in order to do so.

In the tutorial, the first spreadsheet to create was a comparison spreadsheet.
First,
find the place in section VII. of your unit plan to add the file name and
name of disk, then upload the Excel file and then link this Excel file
as an Excel file. Second, save the spreadsheet as an HTML file,
link this web page file to your unit plan, and upload this web page to
your web site and link as an HTML page. Test both links to see that they
work.

In the tutorial, your second spreadsheet to create was a gradebook.
This will be a spreadsheet gradebook for your unit plan. Add the name of
this file and name of disk to the part IX (Evaluation) section of your
unit plan. This spreadsheet required at least 3 quizzes or exams in your
unit plan. For this exercise you should have: made up five student names;
shown the average grade for each student in each row; at the bottom of
each quiz grade column, use functions and formulas to indicate 4 basic
statistics: highest grade (max function); lowest grade (min function);
the count of the number of grades (count function); and the average (average
function) grade for that quiz. First, find the place
in section VII. of your unit plan to add the file name and name of disk
where the gradebook file is kept, upload this Excel file and then link
this Excel file to your unit plan as an Excel file. Second, save
the spreadsheet as an HTML file, link this web page file to your unit plan,
and upload this web page to your web sites. Test both links to see that
they work.
This is just a demonstration gradebook so do not use actual student names.
If you have used actual student names, before you save, delete the student
names and enter fictitious names, then use the spreadsheet copy function
to copy it to every cell that should contain a student name.
Lesson Plan Integration
In section V., after one of the lesson plan titles, add some sentences about
how spreadsheet thinking will be integrated into your unit plan using one or
more of these files linked into your web site. Do not be concerned as to the
sequence of this activity. When the full range of course activities is
completed, then this decision can be made. Later this activity might be moved to
the first, last or in stay in-between in section V.
